The body of the longest serving Be Forward Wanderers Chairman George Chamangwana has been laid to rest at Misesa Cemetery in Blantyre.

Chamangwana died in the early hours of Friday at Blantyre Adventist Hospital after a long illness.

Before proceeding to the cemetery, thousands of Malawians gathered at Kamuzu Stadium to pay their last respects to the fallen hero.

And during eulogy, Wanderers FC General Secretary Mike Butao said Chamangwana’s death is a blow to the club he served wholeheartedly.

“It’s a blow to the club he served wholeheartedly. He was probably the longest serving chairman for Wanderers and we have lost a pillar in Chamangwana,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of all Super League clubs, Nyasa Big Bullets General Secretary Albert Chigoga paid tribute to the deceased saying he was a true friend of football in the country.

“He was dedicated and loved football in general. In him, we have lost a true friend of football in the country. He was a man of few words, may he rest well,” explained Chigoga.

Bullets and Wanderers players acted in solidarity to carry Chamangwana’s casket from the hearse to the ground where body viewing took place.

Officials from the two rival clubs performed guard of honour as the body of Chamangwana was arriving into the stadium.

After the service, thousands of people from all corners of the country proceeded to Misesa Cemetery for the burial ceremony.

During his tenure at the club, the late Chamangwana won several cups and eventually made the club the most successful in cup competitions.

Before ascending to the position, he once played for the Nomads in the 90s and later became team manager.
