The former Dwangwa United, Rostov FC and Jomo Cosmos forward has announced his retirement from active football following the expiry of his contract with Premier Soccer League side Polokwane City.

According to KickOff.com, Esau Kanyenda will now be pursuing a career in coaching with the assistance of the Football Association of Malawi (FAM).

He told the South African publication that he will return back home to launch his coaching career.

“I am hanging up my boots now. Next up for me is coaching because it is something that has always been on my mind. I am actually going back home to pursue coaching with the help of FAM who have indicated that they will assist by sending me to coaching courses,” he told the publication.

He also added that he has done his part and that time has come for him to move on.

“I think I have done my playing role and it is now time to move on. There were some offers from NFD teams here but after careful considerations I thought it is best that I go back home to start my coaching courses,” he explained.

The decision has put to bed reports that he was on the verge of joining Be Forward Wanderers this season.

His professional career started way back in 2002 when he joined Cosmos where he netted 18 goals in 28 starts before leaving for Russia’s Rostov FC where he spend years before returning back to South Africa with Polokwane City.

He is one of the best strikers to have put on Flames jersey as he was part of Malawi’s squad that qualified for the 2010 African Cup of Nations in Angola.

He also reached Cosafa Castle Cup finals with Malawi in 2002 and 2003 as he was the key man during Kim Splidsboel’s tenure.
