Machinga First Grade Magistrate Court on Monday fined a 21-year-old man to pay K250,000 for injuring a 4-year-old boy due to reckless driving.
Confirming the development to Malawi24 was Machinga police publicist Constable Davie Sulumba who identified the convict as Kaloti Javelo.
According to Sulumba, prosecutor Sub-Inspector Cliff Kalawa based at Ntaja police post told the court that on July 10, 2017 at Nsanama trading centre Javelo was riding an unregistered motorcycle without insurance and he did not have a driving licence.
Kalawa further told the court that whilst riding the motorcycle, Javelo hit a 4-year-old boy who sustained serious head injuries.
The victim was admitted at Machinga District Hospital and the accused was arrested soon after the accident.
Javelo pleaded guilty to the charge of reckless driving and prosecutor Kalawa prayed for a meaningful sentence to the convict as such cases are rampant more especially along Bakili Muluzi highway.
In mitigation, the convict asked for fair punishment for he is young and also a first offender.
When passing judgement, his worship First Grade Magistrate Johns Masula said many people who ride motorcycles on roads do not consider other road users.
Magistrate Masula said as such damages and loss of lives are at an increase.
He therefore ordered Javelo to pay K100,000 for reckless driving, K50,000 for using an unregistered motorcycle, K50,000 for no insurance and K50,000 for riding without a licence and in default 4 years in jail with hard labour.
The convict hails from Mkapaleya village, in the area of Traditional Authority Mlomba in Machinga District.
