Moyale Barracks on Sunday became new Mzuzu city kings after a 1-0 win over city rivals Mzuni F.C.

The win means Moyale are on position two with 21 points from 11 games and have cut Mighty Be Forward Wanderers’ lead at the top to 7 points.

The soldiers however had to rely on a penalty to get their win.

In the first half both teams played a passing game but failed to find the back of the net.

Five minutes after the break, Moyale broke the deadlock through the penalty.

Mzuni defender Bob Longwe handled the ball in the box and referee Stefano Gomani pointed at the penalty spot.

Moyale’s Timothy Nyirenda made no mistake but to send Mzuni goalkeeper Chimwemwe Kumkwawa in the opposite direction.

However, the game was marred by ugly scenes and had to be stopped for 13 minutes.

In the 65th minute, play was stopped as Mzuni supporters started throwing stones on the pitch while singing songs provoking officiating panel whom they accused of favouring Moyale.

The game resumed 13 minutes later thanks to Police who calmed the situation.

After play resumed no team scored and the game ended 1-0 in favour of Moyale.

The defeat leaves Mzuni on position 12 with 12 points after playing 10 games.

Coach for Moyale Charles Kamanga thanked God for the win and his boys for a good performance.

On claims that the referee favoured Moyale, Kamanga said it is common for a team that has lost to blame the referee.

On his part, coach for Mzuni Alex Ngwira said his boys performed poorly.
