Be Forward Wanderers took a giant leap towards winning this season’s Super League as they moved seven points clear at the top with a hard fought 2-1 victory over relegation threatened Chitipa United at Balaka Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Jafali Chande scored in each half to take the early pacesetters to 25 points from ten games and send a very strong warning to all contenders that they mean business this time around after nearly 12 years without winning the championship.

The Nomads have now piled pressure on second placed Nyasa Big Bullets, who have dropped 15 points from their opening eleven games so far.

Not that it was all a stroll in the park for the league leaders against the rookies, despite drawing first blood after only seven minutes.

Felix Zulu played in Joseph Kamwendo down the left, and the midfielder pulled it back for Chande to sweep the ball home, 1-0.

The Nomads were playing well especially in the middle of the park but lacked the cutting edge inside the penalty box to add more goals.

With thirty minutes played on the clock, Yamikani Chester saw his shot well saved for a corner by the visitors’ goalie who was the busiest on the day.

Moments later, winger Felix Zulu drafted his effort wide from a close range as he forced himself into Chitipa’s goal area.

Come second half, Wanderers’ hopes of a stroll in the park were quickly erased when Mzuni FC old boy Wacheta Mwenefumbo popped up four yards out following a scramble in Nomads defence when the visitors caught them napping in the line of duty.

Now with their tails up, Chitipa United began to enjoy a good spell of pressure, with Mwenefumbo and co displaying brilliant football to excite Coach Kondwani Mwalweni in the technical panel area.

However, their good work was undone with some few minutes to play on the clock.

A cross from the right flank was flicked on by Alfred Manyozo, and Chande flung himself to head past the visiting goalkeeper into the back of the net, 2-1.

The goal completely destroyed the visitor’s hopes of making a comeback as Wanderers opted to kill off the time with some unnecessary stoppages and after 90 minutes of play, 2-1 it ended.

The win takes Wanderers’ tally to 25 points with a game in hand over second placed Bullets.

As for the rookies, the latest defeat leave them bottom of the standings with just 4 points from eleven games.

In another Super League match, defending champions Kamuzu Barracks thumped Red Lions 3-1 to move up to tenth in the standings with 14 points.

Joel Chipofya scored a brace, with the other goal coming from Gift M’bwana and the win keeps KB’s hopes of retaining their title alive. Innocent Bokosi scored the visitors’ consolation goal.

The defeat sees Red Lions dropping to seventh in the standings with 15 points from eleven games.
