Fisherman drowns in Lake Malawi

A 29-year-old fisherman has died after drowning in Lake Malawi in Mangochi district.

Mangochi police deputy spokesperson Amina Daudi has confirmed the death of Bright Mackenzie who was commonly known as Blantyre. Mangochi

According Daudi, the fisherman was found dead by his fellow fishermen at Matuwi dock.

“When his friend was in the process of fishing he came across the dead body. The man called another fisherman who identified the body,” said Daudi.

The matter was reported to Makokola Police Post and the law enforcers took the body to Mangochi District Hospital.

Postmortem conducted at the same hospital revealed that death was due to suffocation.

Mackenzie was staying alone since he went to Mangochi a few years ago for fishing purposes and nobody knows his relatives.

However, it is believed that he came from Kauphawi village, Traditional Authority Nsamala in Balaka district.

Meanwhile, the dead body is being kept at Mangochi District Hospital mortuary.

Police have since appealed to the general public to inform them if they know the man’s relatives.
