The chief of Malawi prisons has warned all prison warders that they face mutiny charges if they do not return to work immediately.

This is according to a memo made available to Malawi24, released on Sunday, July 16, and signed by prisons chief commissioner Wandika Phiri.

Phiri said the order has come in as the prison’s management is pursuing the issue of salary harmonization between them and the Malawi Police Service.

“You are directed to return to normal duties with immediate effect as management is pursuing the issue of salary harmonization between the Malawi police and the Prison service.

“In review of the foregoing, you are strongly warned that failure to adhere to the directive is tantamount to mutiny and management will not hesitate to immediately take necessary action as stipulated in section 58 of the Prisons Act,” reads part of the memo.

The prison boss has also warned all officers who are not on duty to desist from loitering around prison premises

  8. Why are you intimidating them instead of paying attention to their problems? Will that going to iron out the problems? Kumayamba mwaziganizira muli inu kaye, them too are human beings just like you and me,they also wish to have what you have and do what you do wosangowopsezana apa ngati dziko lino ndilanu nokha NO!

  9. no mutiny here. in a mutiny, the offices would have been closed, the senior officers arrested/killed by junior officers. none of these happened, were on a peaceful strike. bwanji ma khansala anatsekela ma DC kunja aja sanaimbidwe mulandu? bwanji ma cadet anamenya wa police sanaimbidwe mulandu. mungokonza zolakwikazo basi

    1. meaning repressive conditions to be adheard to?Well, NOT in a democracy. complaints started long way back but no response. This was their only way out, the authorities were banking on what you have said, but everything has a limit. Govt even had to listen to pensioners, PENSIONERS who are no longer working, why not them warders?

  10. Prison service is one of the security agencies in the country. There is no way the army can be on strike too is prison service. So others are saying there is intimidation but with ignorance. Let’s suppose the army and police are on strike, what will happen?

    1. We know that there are not allowed to strike. You are missing something. These people are not taken serious and their department has no way to get bribe. Police will never ask for increment but they increase salary by receiving bribe. E.g at home no soap, food, school fees, then a hard criminal throw 200000 just to let him go. Its obvious the police will get that money and go home. But teachers, these prison guard can’t get bribe and they will breath the fire

  11. I wish we had heard from government side why disparity in salaries among these 3 departments, otherwise not justifiable no wonder warders are protesting because wrong decisions made today will be difficult to be reversed in future, in civil service for many time we have been assured of salary harmonization but they are failing.

  12. Prison Warders becoming more like Prisoners. How does a normal person block a responsible Minister from entering the Premises to hear & discuss their grievances?. Malawi looks to now being a Nation of brainless People.

  13. Kkkkkkkkkkkkkkk koma a Malawi akuwaopseza, mmmmm zigawenga zitulukatu mkatimo Tawapatseni basi.ena akuthizimulidwa ndi zigawengazo mkatimo bwanji osanvera kulilako? Hehehehehehe eish!!!!!

  14. ” our wisdom begin to ellapse at a time when righteousness intertwines with negligence- Malcolm X”

the best the prison boss can do is to threaten ….?….are you taking advantage that the prison stuffs striking are of levels of education to an extent of citing “section 54&58″….,of the prison act ……serious ……?

when the judiciary was on strike y dint we not cite section 94(c) of the judiciary act… ?

ooh yes wen teachers were on strike why dint we not cite section 32(1) of the tum act”?……i think we lacking wisdom thus y negligence in the whole matter seem to criss cross with yo righteousness. ….think twice…..

    1. Pepani boss mwina mongokonza i think ku prison ku kakhala kachiwiri,I hope inali 2004 or 5 kunalinso strike ma issue ake anali omwewanso msanga msanga anapanga harmonise ma salary ndipo zinatha bwino bwino.

  20. Mutiny is a criminal conspiracy among a group of people (typically members of the military or the crew of any ship, even if they are civilians) to openly oppose, change, or overthrow a lawful authority to which they are subject.

  21. Simau a msogoleri awa. Ali sure kuti anthuwa onse atasiya ntchito sipakhala vuto? My fellow concerned officers, don’t take this threat. Akulankhulayu amalandila zindalama zochuluka zedi, kaya amdyesa chi banzi ameneyo achisanza ndi phuma but don’t quite your strike till you got what you want

  22. That’s wrong. Stop intimidation and threatening. To me it seems something’s is wrong here. Instead of solving the problem you threaten. What about teachers. Are you going to threaten as well. That why the problem gets worse. Swallow your pride and face the problem and sort it out.

    1. I understand that police, army, and prison guards are law enforcement and government security. But if the issues raised always fall on deaf ears. That leaves with no option but to break the law. Since the law was set by people then I don’t see it strange. But don’t forgot that they have been crying but being ignored now they strike you say law really

    2. That’s why in Africa we will keep fighting each other for small matters that can be solved easily and fast. We always look on one side of the situation. Its time we look from different angles. I understand but the dangers that can cause. But because they are not allowed to strike then no concerns must be heard from them. Everywhere in the world people take advantage of Malawians because the say they understand quick. If you go to RSA just mention Malawi you will be first choice. Because you don’t complain even you see that this is unacceptable and with bad conditions. Employment must favour both employees and employer. Not one side no that not good

    3. Stop comparing Security departments with Teaching department. These are two different departments with different rules brother. Military forces doesn’t go on strike, where in the world have you ever heard this has happened????? Svhool me

    4. Dali Gazaman Bakuwa I am aware of that government security don’t strike. But as far I know where in the world have you ever heard that when you security raise any issue you ignore. Is that a way you solve issues. Everywhere you go no strike for these people but when they raise issue the government discuss it and come up with solutions. But they are striking because they are left without option. If this matter was attended then we should be not debating here. But due to ignoring that’s why thing are turning the way are now. This is first time in history in the world. Zimbabwe is suffering but the police, army, prison guard are looked after to avoid situation like this. So are they going to eat law?

    5. Blocking the minister from entering the prison premise is what will solve the problem? Charging them with Mutiny will it be wrong? How about sending their chief to submit their concerns, wasn’t it a good idea?

    6. Dali Gazaman Bakuwa that shows that this matter is old. As far as I know. You Dont strike without table discussion. That show they have send their problems before but it was just falling on deaf ears. Take it like it sad you trying to solve this problem but no one takes you for granted because you have no right to strike. Trying bwana ndiganizireni nyumba zazitini zodotha komanso malipiro ndizinthu mnene zizilili umu chonde bwana ndimvereni. Then your boss know that you don’t strike and ignore you. Then what next strike and know you say they are not allowed to strike. A lion to eat grass its not a choice but n meat available no choice no option. Its simple take it like if it was you in a situation like this

    7. you have already said in your first comment ,,break the law”” i know u know what it means to break the law,,,which means if they get punished u won’t be surprised,,, laws were made by people of course but when u break the same laws which were made by ur fellow human beings there is something u will get that is punish

    8. The issue is police and prison petitioned the very same ministry to transform their salary structure, when it comes for the pay day, police get the answer, while prison remain intact, the prison juniors asked their bosses what will be the way forward, their bosses answered them let’s wait for the ministry, so juniors refused to be nothing.

    9. The problem in Malawi is people enjoy suffering and failure of someone. How do you feel to see these people suffering when they keeps criminal away from your family. For sure if this department they was a way to get bribes trust me they won’t be complaining like this. That why we see all department that get bribes will strike and cry but no straight answer. Look Africa at large police don’t stress they just increase their salary thru bribes. It’s only these few department that is not easy to get bribe.

    10. Thats true dzikoli ndilozunguliradi ngati mpira…..posachedwapa mukapezana konko mutasanduka white white….bwno nazotu !!
