Capital Oil Refining Industries (CORI) Limited, manufacturers of Kukoma Cooking Oil, has donated K0.5 million towards this year’s World Sports Journalists Day Celebrations to be held in Salima at Livingstonia Beach next month.

The event was scheduled to take place earlier this month but Sports Writers Association of Malawi (SWAM) had to shift the date to August due to lack of funding as the budget is pegged at MK10 million.

As the time is fast approaching, SWAM executive committee pleaded with the corporate world to support the event financially to cater for the expenses during the celebrations.

Now, CORI has donated the said amount to the Sports Writers, with 25 litres of KUKOMA Cooking Oil on top.

Speaking during cheque presentation in Blantyre at CORI offices, the company’s Administration Manager Alex Chisiano said his company decided to partner with Sports Writers because sports brings people from different backgrounds together.

“We are very delighted to partner with SWAM on this historic day. We have passion for sports because it brings people from different backgrounds together. We sponsor different sporting activities and Sports Writers add value to these Sporting disciplines because without them, the world of sport would be incomplete so we have decided to donate K500 000 towards the event and 25 litres of KUKOMA Cooking Oil,” he said.

On his part, Swam President Peter Kanjere hailed CORI for the gesture.

“We are very grateful to CORI for rescuing us with this donation at a time when most of the companies are passing through economic hardships. This donation means a lot to Sports Writers and we are asking more companies to emulate what CORI has done today,” he explained.

He also revealed that the organizing committee is still looking for the remaining K8.5 million to complete the budget in time for the event.

Before the celebrations, Swam members will donate items to patients at Salima District Hospital.
