Be Forward Wanderers’ unbeaten league run came to an abrupt end against resurgent Civil Sporting Club  at Civo Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Nomads were unbeaten in seven league matches but on Saturday, they met their match as the visitors were taught some footballing soccer lessons by the home side.

Quick-fire goals from Fletcher Bandawe and Innocent Tanganyika saw Civil secure a well-deserved 2-0 win to shatter Yasin Osman’s ultra-defensive tactics and boost their own chances of breaking into the top eight before the end of the first round.

With key strikers missing in the starting eleven for the Nomads due to injuries, Precious Msosa was given the mandate to lead in attack but Civil’s defence led by Gomezgani Chirwa and Willard Dickson stood firm to deny the visitors any chance of finding the back of the net.

The league leaders dominated possession in the opening ten minutes but lacked the cutting edge in front of goals.

However, Wanderers’ pace was cut short by the hosts who were now in control of the midfield where Andrew Banda and Patrick Thupi were operating.

Raphael Phiri forced Richard Chipuwa into making his first save when his thunderbolt was tipped over the cross bar by the former Zomba United shot-stopper.

Wingers Felix Zulu and Mike Kaziputa were at times deeper than their full-backs, allowing the home side to quickly take control and fire off a number of shots at Chipuwa.

Civil kept on knocking but just like their opponents in the opening minutes, finishing was the main problem as Lucky Malata and Harry Nyirenda made some clearances at the back for the Lali Luban boys.

The home side continued to press harder and opened the scoring just after 22 minutes through Bandawe from a stunning counter-hurricane attack.

Nomads defence gave away possession inside their own half, allowing the former Dedza Young Soccer forward to race through the visitors’ back four before slotting past defenseless Chipuwa into the back of the net, 1-0.

The hosts were on fire as Bandawe, Phiri and Tanganyika tormented their opponents in search for more goals but were unlucky as they missed numerous goal scoring opportunities.

With two minutes left to play in the half, Civil doubled their tally.

A cross from the right flank of the field caught Nomads defence napping in the line of duty to allow Innocent Tanganyika to rose above Malata at the far post before heading past Chipuwa into an empty net to send Civo Stadium into a frenzy, 2-0.

Come second half, Wanderers made a triple substitution as they tried to snatch something out of the game.

Rafick Namwera, Stainley Sanudi and Jabulani Linje all came in for Kaziputa, Bongani Kaipa and Zulu.

The change brought some rhythm into Nomads attack as they started playing with intent no wonder Tione Tembo in goals for Civil, who was on holiday in the first half, was forced to make his first save to deny Linje from scoring.

Moments later, a long range effort from Joseph Kamwendo was smartly saved by Tembo who was the busiest in the half.

The home side seemed to have been satisfied with their lead and opted to sit back as Wanderers kept on pressurizing in search for the much needed goal.

The Nomads were in complete control of the match, with Linje and Kamwendo coming close to reducing the arrears but Tembo was very outstanding between the two sticks for the home side.

At the other end, Phiri almost nailed it for the hosts when he scored but referee Patrick Ngoleka ruled the goal for offside.

Minutes later, Bandawe was at it again, this time around, racing into the box only to see his shot well blocked by ever reliant Malata at the back for the league leaders.

Wanderers tried everything to snatch something out of the game but Civil’s defence stood firm to collect maximum points and move to within five points of Wanderers in 8th position.

The Nomads remain top of the standings with 19 points from eight games played so far.

Their next assignment will be another crucial encounter against unpredictable Masters Security at Dedza Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
