Malawi’s lake wrangle with neighbouring country Tanzania will not end soon as the High Level Mediation Team on the issue has proposed that heads of the two countries are to give guidance on the resolutions made in Pretoria, South Africa.

The development follows mediation talks that Malawi had with Tanzania on the lake issue as the two differ on ownership; Tanzania claims that part of Lake Malawi belongs to it while Malawi says it owns the whole lake.

Mutharika, Magufuli
Mutharika and Magufuli will meet over the row.

The mediation team led by former Mozambican head of state Joaquim Chissano has suggested to have the two presidents being briefed before a verdict is made.

Spokesperson for Malawi’s ministry of foreign affairs and international cooperation Rejoice Shumba said the resolutions are to be tabled before presidents Peter Mutharika and John Magufuli.

“Having heard from both delegates, High Level Mediation Team has proposed to brief and consult the two excellences for the two countries that is Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika and Dr John Pombe Magufuli on further guidance on the resolutions since the two countries are eager to hear to the end,” said Shumba in a statement.

The consultations are expected to be done within a period of three months before a verdict is known on the matter.

Malawi has been claiming that Tanzania has no right to claim ownership as the 1890 Anglo-German treaty gave full ownership to Nyasaland before the name was changed to Malawi.

The Malawi delegates to the talks led by minister of foreign affairs and international cooperation Francis Kasaila urged Tanzania to restrain from provocative actions like production of new maps that show that the Eastern African country owns part of the lake.

President Mutharika is on record to have assured that Malawi will not give up any part of the lake to Tanzania arguing Malawians own the whole lake.

  6. I proudly inform you my fellow Malawians that in today’s MBC News in Chichewa our dear patriotic leader Prof. A. P. Mutherika has asked us all to fully support him in protecting Malawi’s bounderies and minerals in which he emphasily insighted that “LAKE MALAWI HAS BEEN FOR MALAWI ALONE ALL ALONG, AND IT WILL FOREVER BE NO MATTER WHAT.” I thank God for blessing us with such wise and brave leader… Mr President if you happen to read this on behalf patriotic Malawians ‘we are in full support under any circumstance, if you need voluntery soldiers feel free to announce and we will flock in masses to wipe out Tanzania…

  7. Malawians don’t worry about it, Muthalika is following Rules of United Nations if the Tazania don’t know this time will come and they will regret and seek for ps treaty just wait and see

  13. Apm when you was asked about what you like do when you are free at home i recall you replied by saying you like to watch war film so my apm this is time to show Tanzanians about what you like.

  14. I see some of you pointed out why the name of it so called lake Malawi in both sides of the countries .taken it as evidence of belongingness to Malawi. This is so weak point my friends in Malawi. We Tanzanians have been there since this world were created and use the lakes waters. Where do you want us to go? You want us to pay taxes for the use of lake Nyasa waters? Shameless

    1. Amin the British and Germans signed a Heligoland treaty perterning the lake boundary issue in 1890, and in 1964 the treaty was re-signed at OAU affirming Africa’s boundaries bounding African nations to forever respect the boarders set by the colonial rulers, would you call both the treaties mistakes? The 1964 treaty has Mwarimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere’s signature on it, so what impression are you giving us about him? You asked for a proof now you have it

    Because of its lake…Nyasa….means lake
    Land….means land of Malawi…kkk…so u think
God has created another lake…& u need it
    Before it gone…Amazing….????

  18. My fellow Malawians, even in the bible the Israelists stood steef and fought for their land, lets emulate from Israel and defend whats ours… Be courageously patriotic not cowardous… ‘OUR LAKE, OUR MINERALS!’ period…

But the one who is extending his house and rebuild his fence is a good neighbor.how can you extend a fence yet you are sorrounded by beibours?

  21. I, see THE ALMIGHTY GOD, being with both sides now, MALAWI & TANZANIA, guiding them to PEACEFUL-DISCUSSIONS RATHER THAN CONFRONTATIONAL & HATRED AMONG THE TWO SOVEREIGN NEIBHOURING-STATES: Even though the resolutions are not yet published, waiting for the LEADERS OF THE TWO STATES TO PONDER ON THEM; still more, am hopefull that GOD WHO CALLED THEM TO LOOK AFTER HIS PEOPLE WILL GIVE THEM WISDOM TO COME TO ONE UNDERSTANDING FOR THE HARMONY OF TWO STATES. I, DO SINCERELY & HONESTLY ASK MY FELLOW WORKERS IN GOD TO CONTINUE PRAYING FOR BOTH PRESIDENTS DR.JOHN POMBE MAGUFULI & PROF.PETER MUTHARIKA TO RECEIVE GOD’S GUIDANCE ON THIS ROW!! For we have all seen what peril is in SUDAN,SOMALIA,LYBIA,NIGERIA, DRC & MOST PARTS OF CENTRAL AFRICA: INDEED IF NO ONE IS HAPPY TO WHAT WE SEE THERE, THEN WE SHOULD BE PRAYING DAY & NIGHT!! THE REV. CHARU CHIBISA BANDA.

    1. No need to be patient apa sir. Mutu umodzi susenza denga.. I proudly inform you my fellow Malawians, just in case you missed Nkhani pa MBC TV, that in today’s MBC TV News in Chichewa our dear patriotic leader Prof. A. P. 22. These borders were created by colonisers who did not know what they were doing. But regardless, we should respect them and until we have an African state. Lets not greed overcome us.

    1. If we are to ignore the bounderies set by colonial rulers then map of the whole Africa must be redrufted coz last time i checked on the map i saw Malawi accupying a very small portion of land as compared to Tz and other African nations. We too need equal share of land… ‘OUR LAKE, OUR MINERALS!’ no turning back…

  23. So this so called president of Tanzania has something in the head, all he can talk is about lake lake but where was he when the British was demarcating the boundaries

  24. Tanzania ndianthu akuba kukonda kuonelela Dziko lathu chifukwa ndilam’manja zachamba basi John Pombe Magufuli ukunamatu ndianthu ako ndi lake Nyasa imeneyo ufune usafune

  25. U pipo.Do u mean Indian Ocean only belongs to Indians ha ha ha ha.Malawi owning the lake won’t bring changes.Muluzi,Joyce & Bingu were all these fools not to struggle for the lake?May be we have to fight and shade blood to bring changes. The Devil is at work.

    1. People of Malawi.I don’t see why we’re in trouble between us. Tanzanians have been use the Waters since the world was created.the same to Malawians. By the way international boundaries concerning water bodies states very clear. Pls no need to misunderstood between us. Am from Arusha Tanzania.

    2. Andrew the thing is we just want you to move to the shores (line boundary on map) thats all,you can still use the waters

    3. African leaders signed a treaty that colonial bounderies must forever be respected at all cost, and if you review the treaty you will find Mwarimu Julious Kambarage Nyerere’s signature on it, and that cannot be broken unless the whole map of Africa be redrufted for equal share of land…

    4. We are talking of the ownershipo of our beautiful lake not about you Tanzanians using it. You are using it because it boarders the two countries but the truth is Lake Malawi or you call it Lake Nyasa is ours. It was named Lake Nyasa by Dr. D Livingstone after hearing that it’s name is Nyasa ( Nyasa means Lake in our Yao language). A girl called Namilasi in 1859 is the one who told Livingstone this name. Namilasi was not a Tanzanian or Taifa but was a Malawian, so why are you claiming a part of as yours? I thing your government is full of idiots and fools. We are prepared to die for our lake. Stupid fools.

  26. NO discution at all if they want the lake tell them to met there AKufuna kulanda chovala chili mnthupi?KULANDA GALU FUPA LILINKAMWA Sikophweka Olo ali oonda

    1. Malawians Must read this: It is the responsibility of every Malawian regardless of our Faith, Political Stand or WHAT, To PRAY: firstly for our Head of State as he is to carry our TRUTH to the whole world, Concerning Our Mother Malawi original MAP # the_warm_heart_of_africa , will remain warm. Our Malawi our Nation, Secondly, LET’s be UNITED Lake MALAWI will be ours forever and ever in JESUS NAME. Go His Excellence Don’t be afraid be VERY STRONG AND COURAGEOUS!! •our MALAWI OUR LAKE

    2. Mtunga you keep proving to be unacustomed over African History so I suggest you concentrate on your research first bofore you argue with me coz you are being laughed at of your ignorance, be aware that people are reading your senseless stipulations aiming at manipulating people’s minds… Its not working out for you so stop embarrassing yourself and family…

  27. They are doing it like that because we use they port route from Dar eeslam to Malawi,so they know if we vex they will close for us,that’s why Big man late Bingu wa muthalika wanted to introduce our own port at Sanje to avoid looking us down.

    1. Ma brother we will use South Africa’s ports, however it will increase the cost but its worth it, and then retaliate by clossing up our boarders to all those that go to TZ through Malawi, and open up to those going to South Africa, thereby killing their international trade… Review the SADC map and you will sense the impact… No going back on this one, ‘OUR LAKE, OUR MINERALS!’, that should be our theme on this issue…

    2. Could you tell us……where have seen boarder like what you’re claiming?
      Don’t be selfish…..
      Tanzanian can’t accept such thing!

    3. Kinunda, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana find it cheaper to pass through Malawi, if we close our boarders to Tz these countries will be forced to revert South Africa thereby sabotaging Tanzanian port revenue generation… And believe me South Africa would smile at the move…

  28. so of all the advisers no one is courageus enough to tell apm to give up as that part of the lake belongs to tz. Wasting time for nothing. And hard-earned money

    1. That’s nonsense. What about those Tanzanians who are along the lake side shouldn’t use the water?Let them be fishing too.God created it,not APM.Fighting won’t bring peace.

    2. George, Tz has her ships on the lake. Tz uses that part of lake where malawi doesn’t use. Tz is claiming that part.

    3. BROTHER BELE: IF THAT PART IS FOR TZ WHY CLAIMING IT NOW, 50YRS OVER OF TZ’S RULE?? INDEED MY DEAR BROTHER, When we say BLOOD IS THICKER THAN WATER: We mean relationship that exist between the two nations: let the people of that catch fish in the lake, let ships transport them to & fro for they r brothers & sisters only to b divided by ARTIFICIAL-BOUNDARIES WHICH U TO DAY WANT TO SEE THEIR BLOOD-SHED & UN-CESSARY DEATHS OF INNOCENT PEOPLE!! GOD FORBID INDEED!!!!

    4. Are you nuts? if you don’t want war then tell Tz to let go both the lake and the minerals otherwise we’ll face it, and don’t we won’t penetrate through TZ we will… LET GO THE LAKE TANZANIA!

    5. The treaty was made by the imperialists who did not even bother seek the views of the natives. I stronglybelieve that the ushering in of independence era diluted all the imperial decisions made by the non Africans. The international law clearly state that if 2 countries are separated by the body of water, they should sharethe waters. It is this law that saw Mozambique take the portion of L. Malawi. Tanzania shares the waters ofSongwe River with Malawi by the contemplation of the same law. I see Tanzania laughing the loudest at the very end.

    6. Unfortunately when Kumuzu Banda and Nyerere were presidents the African Union agreed to respect what you are calling “imperial” at all cost. And this is what our dear leader, Mutharika, is using. On your argument I agree with you that ‘all African bounderies must be redrufted, and the land must be shared ‘equally’ to solve the ‘imperialism’… ‘OUR LAKE, OUR MINERALS!’…

    7. is the lake called lake malawi or lake Tanzania? what makes the lake to be called that name? for how many years does that lake called that name? answer these question then you will find the answer

    8. Chibisa Banda, if you have a car you can’t let people use it anyhow. Malawi allowed tz to use the lake, that was her mistake. Malawi should have told tz not to use the lake long time ago

    9. Mike my point was going to what Chibisa has said,Mw is just claiming whats hers,we aint saying they should not use it,no

    10. MIKE BELE: U SAY MALAWI WAS MISTAKEN TO LET THEIR BROTHERS & SISTERS ON THE OTHER SIDE TO USE THE LAKE: THEN IT’S INDEED LAUGHABLE TO UR JUDGEMENT; MIKE U GIVE UR RELATIVE A PLACE TO SLEEP, THEN HE/SHE CLAIMS THAT ROOM TO B HIS/HER!! I DON’T REALLY KNOW WHAT U CALL SUCH PEOPLE IN UR VILLAGE: I PERSONALY, NEED TO B VERY CAUTIOUS ON THIS AS TO WHAT W CALL SUCH PEOPLE IN OUR VILLAGE!! ONCE AGAIN, THE PEOPLE ON EITHER SIDES OF MALAWI/TANZANIA ARE RELATED BOTH IN DNA, CULTURE & TRADITIONS: THEREFORE ANY PROBLEM SHOULD B SOLVED AMICABLY & IN HARMONY BY NOT FOLLOWING THE BLOOD-THIRSTY WARRIORS!! THANK U MIKE BELE.

    11. TO U BROTHER ZIKOMO MTUNGA: U R TALKING OF MOZAMBIQUE/MALAWI BOUNDARY ON THE LAKE: SORRY THAT U SEEM TO KNOW BUT NOT!! NEIBHOURING COUNTRIES HAVE THEIR OWN TREATIES AS WELL: SO TAKE IT FROM ME THAT “IGNORANCE IS NO DEFENCE!!!

    12. Chibisa has asked a very good question… “U GIVE UR RELATIVE A PLACE TO SLEEP, THEN HE/SHE CLAIMS THAT ROOM TO B HIS/HER!! I DON’T REALLY KNOW WHAT U CALL SUCH PEOPLE IN UR VILLAGE: I PERSONALY, NEED TO B VERY CAUTIOUS ON THIS AS TO WHAT W CALL SUCH PEOPLE IN OUR VILLAGE!!”… We call them ” PROPERTY GRABBERS”, thats what Tazania is, a property grabber! But this time around TZ has landed on a wrong destination where it may explode to ashes…

  29. Both the lake and the minerals fully belong to Malawians Mr President, and no discussions about that… To my fellow Malawians, its time we start speaking tough without doubt about what rightfully belongs to us at all cost… Tanzania ‘ikuyesa zida’ its not like they don’t know of their wrong stand on the matter…

    1. The treaty was made by the imperialists who did not even bother seek the views of the natives. I stronglybelieve that the ushering in of independence era diluted all the imperial decisions made by the non Africans. 3. A thing we are never going to do, ‘OUR LAKE, OUR MINERALS!’ no turning back on this one… If its war they are looking for, let them bring it on… One comes to your house and forcefully claims for a bedroom, would let them have it just because they look giants? Do you think if TZ gets part of that lake Mozambique will not be second in claiming the whole part of their side in extension to what they already have? Wake up! I will die for my belonging, and I urgue my fellow Malawians to be as patriotic as I am together with our dear leader Mutharika…

  30. kkkkkk Magufuli amayesa zophweka….momwe ndikuwadziwira ine bwanawa sangalore zachibwana bwana the lake is #Lake_Malawi until Jesus will come

  31. we are not going to take any nosanse from Tanzania , we the oldinary Malawians we have big row to play in supporting our president ,

  32. Why the name Lake Malawi not lake tanganyika for about 53yrs now. Where were you in the time of Julias Nyerere and DR. H. KAMUZU BANDA, mind you!

    1. Kinunda Tz cannot fight Malawi, you do not have the skill… Ask your militery about what Malawi does in DR Congo then rewrite your shameful abracadabra speach…

    2. Then why your country fighting wit poor malawi over the lake Malawi. Instead of helping malawi to grow economically you r busy waisting your income trying to make Malawi more poor by grabbing what doesn’t belong to you. If you believe in one God plz back off.

    1. Iwe Hastings machende ako. bwanji osangochita komenti ndi mmene nkhani iliri? this issue is not about an individual but the whole nation and citizens. ngati uli ndi nkwiyo ndi pitala don’t fight him here, ukapeze malo ena for your nonsense. can’t you see you are the only one with a stupid comment?

    2. Guyz mukati mfundo alibe mukuthauzanji iye pokhala tsogoleri wa dziko? Ooo mwina mudzakhala okodwa nyanja ija aitenge atazania eeti

  33. Kumanena chomwe chatsitsa dzaye kuti njobvu itchoke nyanga. Tanzania wants a share of oil in Lake Malawi. Kulanga Ntchentche ndi kunyera mmadzi. Just leave oil exploration in Lake Malawi and all this shit will come to an end. by the way Malawi is pumping drinking water from Lake Malawi which is used in Blantyre (From Walkers Ferry, shire) and will be pumping water to be used in Lilongwe. So Oil drilling and drinking water do not work together. Lets avoid creating problems. Just leave oil drilling by the way oil use is coming to an end and countries are going for green energy and now we are waking up from our sleep too late. Where were we all these years?

    1. I as a malawian citizen and as the owner of the house for example,i cant stop doing anything that will benefit for my children in my own yard just because of my neighbour.no! Its my own teritory and i cant let someone come and tell me no sence that he or she have a bunch of banana in my yard.what is in my yard belongs to me.theys no any part of lake that belong to tanzania.if mr president failed.we as a malawi defence force will take it over.what belongs to malawi shall be for malawi for ever.period

  35. what were they discussing in southafrica #pretoria ?….what are there side former heads of states #mozambique #botwana and southafrica ? yeeh lets them meet poor African leaders takes too long time to solve one problem but they know the truth ….never share lake Malawi full stop

  36. Why can’t they just let poor Malawi be Malawi until to the end without picking a fight with anyone…They have ocean, lakes plus mount Kilimanjaro but hy still wants our lake.Tanzania beta review the world map shame!!

    1. BROTHER ISAAC ZULU MBOKANI GAMA: NO ONE IS POOR ON HIS/HER PROPERTY. IF GOD GAVE THE LAKE TO MALAWI BY THE ANGLO/GERMAN TREATY OF 1890, why do u call her POOR? IS IT MALAWI, (the poor as u say) THAT HAS GONE TO TZ TO BEG PARTS OF TZ’S WATERS?? IF NOT, THEN WHO IS POOR?? INDEED PRAY ZULU TO JUDGE THROUGH GOD’S KNOWLEDGE!!!

    2. The treaty was made by the imperialists who did not even bother seek the views of the natives. I strongly believe that the ushering in of independence era diluted all the imperial decisions made by the non Africans. On your argument I agree with you that ‘all African bounderies must be redrufted, and the land must be shared ‘equally’ to solve the ‘imperialism’… ‘OUR LAKE, OUR MINERALS!’…

    4. I THINK U NEED TO B REMINDED THAT IN THAT TREATY, THERE IS NO STATEMENT THAT LIMITS THE TREATY THAT WHEN U GET INDEPENDENCE THEN ALL BOUNDARIES WILL B RE-NEWD!! IT WAS NOT A FAKE TREATY AS UR THOUGHTS!!!

    5. Anangisye Mwamondwe, you really need to be lectured that there was no African Union during the reign of the fallen leaders you have mentioned. Do not argue just for the sake of it. You and others here need to realise that bilateral treaties are subject to international law. Every treaty which is found to be inconsistent with the International law is regarded as irrelevant to the extent of that’d inconsistency.

  37. The Tanzanians think that Malawians are stupid. This row is about Tanzania’s belief that Malawi should always be a poor country.
