Malawian law students in human rights competition

Two students from the Faculty of Law at Chancellor College have qualified for the 9th Nelson Mandela World Human Rights Moot Court competition to be held in Geneva, Switzerland.

The two lawyers to be are Atupele Masanjala and Gonjetso Dikiya who are expected to represent the country in the competition that is scheduled to take place from 18-21 July, 2017.

According to Masanjala, the competition will help her to improve her skills. She has since vowed to make Malawians proud by bringing the top prize to the country.

On his part, Dikiya said such competitions are vital for universities as they help to put participating institutions on the map.

A lecturer in the faculty of law, who is also the duo’s coach Dr Enoch Chilemba expressed hope in the two.

Chilemba said that the practical exercise that the students will undergo promises to be an eye opener which will add value to their academic life.

In the competition, Africa will be represented by University of Malawi, Chancellor College, University of Pretoria, Midlands State University of Zimbabwe, Strathmore University of Kenya and Great university of Kenya.

The competition is organized by the centre of human rights, based at the University of Pretoria, with support from United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva in collaboration with the Regional Office for Southern Africa of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (ROSA).

The 2017 Nelson Mandela World Human Rights Moot Court Competition will include one day event designed to expose students to work of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights as well as the Human Rights Council.
