Former FAM boss laid to rest

Former Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president Geoff Rowani Chimbirima Gondwe was on Tuesday laid to rest at his home in Mwachirwa village TA Chikulamayembe Rumphi.

Gondwe who died aged 77 worked as a treasure at FAM before he became president of the association in early 2000s.
He was also the first Malawian to serve as Cosafa vice president.

People who attended the burial ceremony included FAM second vice president Othaniel Hara, former FAM president Mr Zimba, Women’s football president Severia Chalera, Chess president Kezzie Msukwa and Member of Parliament for Rumphi central constituency Enock Chihana.

Speaking on behalf of FAM, Hara said the association is shocked with the death of their former boss.
“We are shocked with untimely death of Mr Geoff Gondwe. He was our pillar, our adviser and a man we used to ask how we can run football in Malawi. We learnt more from him because of his humbleness,” he said.

Gondwe also served as chairman of trustees of Musicians Union of Malawi and President of Union of National Bank Pensioners.

General Secretary of Musicians Union of Malawi Thomas Lupesya said they have lost a man who was their mentor.
“We have lost a man who was always there when we needed him, he was a man who worked very hard to establish the association to be recognized in Malawi,” said Lupesya
