A 75-year-old man has died after a meat seller hit him when the two were quarrelling over goat meat in Dowa district.

Dowa police spokesperson Richard Kaponda has identified the old man as Masiye Maritchi.

According to Kaponda, the incident happened on Sunday when Tsanzo Mbewu who has since been arrested was selling goat meat at a local bar within Mtande village in the district.

“The old man came and bought some meat from the suspect and told him to keep the meat saying he will collect when going home,” Kaponda said.

When time came for the man to leave the place, he asked for his meat but the meat seller told him that his grandson had already taken the meat.
This did not please the old man and a quarrel broke out between the two.

“The suspect hit the old man on the forehead using his hand and the victim lost consciousness after hitting the wall of a nearby house,” Kaponda said.

He was taken to Mtengowanthenga Mission Hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Postmortem conducted at the same hospital indicated the death was due to haemorrhage, as a result of injury to the brain.

The meat seller is currently in police custody at Dowa police station. He will appear in court soon after the completion of the investigations.

The suspect comes from Chatama village while the deceased hailed from Mtande village, all from Traditional Authority Msakambewa in Dowa district.
