Blantyre City Council starts closing businesses with expired licenses

Weeks after issuing a stern call to business operators in Blantyre to renew their licenses, the Blantyre City Council is now poised to start sealing businesses that have not followed this order.

Business operators were asked to renew their business licenses at the beginning of the new government year as per requirement of the 2012 Business Licensing Act.

Businesses without license risk closure

BCC Director of Commerce, Industry and Trade Dennis Chinseu told the media last month that the current business licenses end on the 30th of June 2017.

Chinseu warned that effective from 1 July 2017, all businesses operating without a license in the commercial city will be closed, but the council was yet to start the exercise.

According to Chinseu, the council is mandated to license all businesses owned by Malawians while all businesses owned by foreign nationals are expected to be licensed by the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism.

However, some foreign owned businesses involved in food processing and liquor selling would be inspected and licensed by the council.

Business owners have since been advised to make license renewal payments directly to the council’s account at Civic Centre and not to the officers who conduct the licensing inspection
