6 nabbed for stealing 62 bags of fertilizer

Police in Machinga are keeping in custody six people for stealing fertilizer from a locomotive wagon at Liwonde Railway Station.

Machinga police Public Relations Officer Constable Davie Sulumba told Malawi24 that the suspects stole 62 bags of fertilizer worth K1.2 million.

According to Sulumba, two of the suspects Kondwani Kamanga aged 38 and Goodson Alli, 50, who work as G4S guards at Liwonde Railway station were charged with theft by servant contrary to section 286 of the penal code.

Three other suspects, Davie Maloya aged 37, Laston Chalema aged 38 and White Samson, 19, were charged with theft contrary to section 371 of the penal code.

Police also arrested Chrissy Makweza, mother to Davie Maloya, for receiving stolen property contrary to section 328 of the penal code.

He said Liwonde police received information that criminals were stealing fertilizer from a locomotive wagon which was stationed at Liwonde Railway Station.

“Follow ups were made which resulted into the arrest of the two security guards and recovery of 26 bags of fertilizer which were carried in a minibus driven by Laston Chalema,” he said.

Police later recovered 25 bags from the house of Chrissy Makweza while 11 bags were found abandoned at a bush near the railway station.

Meanwhile police are still investigating the issue to track down other suspects who are at large
