AfDB boss laid to rest

The remains of African Development Bank (AfDB) Director for Southern Africa Dr Tonia Kandiero have been laid to rest in Nkhotakota district.

Late Kandiero passed away after collapsing in her office in Pretoria, South Africa.

Her remains were laid to rest on Wednesday at Farm Cemetery in Nkhotakota district.

AfDB Malawi Senior Officer Benson Nkhoma described the death of late Kandiero as a loss to African Development Bank family and the world as a whole.

He said that Kandiero complained of health issues before collapsing in her office on Wednesday night last week.

Among other dignitaries who attended the funeral ceremony include Vice President Dr Saulos Klaus Chilima, Malawi Congress Party President Dr Lazarus Chakwera, Finance Minister Goodall Gondwe, Democratic Progressive Party spokesperson Francis Kasaila and former Vice President Khumbo Kachali.

Kandiero hailed from Phwangwa Village, Traditional Authority Malengachanzi in Nkhotakota district.

At AfDB, Kandiero was basically concerned with development and business issues in Southern Africa.

She was promoted to her position in November 2016 and before joining the bank, she once worked at South Africa’s National Treasury preliminary as Director of Trade and Microeconomic Policy and later as the Director for Global Development Policy and International Economics.

She held a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration from Morehead State University and Masters Degree and PhD in economics from Howard University, all in United States of America.
