President Peter Mutharika is skipping this year’s African Union (AU) summit as a way of saving money.

According to Presidential Press Secretary Mgeme Kalilani, Mutharika and First Lady Gertrude Mutharika are not attending the 29th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the Heads of State and Government of the African Union summit which has started today in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

“I can confirm that the president is not going to the summit,” said Kalilani.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Francis Kasaila has also missed the summit as the

Mutharika administration wants to cut frequent internal and external travels of the Head of State and cabinet ministers.

Instead, Malawi is being represented by its ambassador to Ethiopia Chimango Chirwa.

Meanwhile, social commentator Stanley Kenani has hailed Mutharika for skipping the summit saying nothing comes out of the meetings.

“It’s nice to hear that, as a cost-cutting measure, President Peter Mutharika will not be attending the African Union Heads of State summit in Addis Ababa. Frankly, nothing of substance comes out of such summits. They have been ongoing for decades, yet our continent has very little to show for it. The African Union cannot even finance itself, relying, instead, on the European Union, China and other ‘well-wishers’. He who feeds you controls you,” said Kenani in a Facebook post.

This year’s African Union is being held under the theme, “Harnessing the Demographic Dividend through Investment in the Youth.”

At the two-day summit, leaders will discuss continental trade, AU reforms, peace and security, funding for the AU, and youth empowerment, among other things.

  4. Now i have realized that malawians are the most difficult people to rule. they all have a woman’s brain. It doesn’t matter what you do to a woman or how much effort you put to make sure your woman is happy, she would never appreciate a thing. Instead she’d mourn, complain even nagging, crying to everyone around her that her husband is useless. What i see in most of these comments, is a bunch of obulutu. Some stupid idiots are even asking why did the president go to the UK? Guys are sure up to now you don’t know why the trip to the UK? Come on Malawi, this bitterness, envy, jealousy, hatred and negativity are the fruits of umbuli and won’t take us anywhere. Stop being bitter, chitsankho chinachitika kalekale and you lost, don’t you think its about time to move on and progress? Mukakhala anzathu inu a chitumbuka amenenso ndi ambiri amene achita comment nagatively apapa, mukungotaya nthawi. i don’t think even if it was MCP that won in 2014, kuti mukanakhala ndi pabwino poposa apa. agalu anyapapi.

    1. I have the same in mind sis. Since AU caters for all individual’s expenses not Malawi paying unless if Malawi invites Chiefs to accompany the president then the country is responsible for chief’s expenses.

  9. Trying to convince rotten brains…. most comments reflect nature of human being.in everything you do in life there someone out there ready to find fault.

  10. Why did he go to UK if indeed he thinks about Malawians.

  11. Conference diplomacy is the heart of Multilateralism where it is an opportunity for heads of states to exchange ideas, it is any opportunity to discuss issues very important matters of state and a public relations stunt that sees diplomats outdo each other, important issues are addressed and communique that has been discussed by permanent representatives which are heads of mission accredited to international organisations

  12. Don’t fool us in this way, we have sources where we get the truth about this idiot. There is no saving here as you can put it, otherwise dig for the truth
