An employee of Illovo Sugar Company based at Dwangwa estate has drowned in an irrigation canal.
According to police reports, the deceased has been identified as Gomezgani Ng’anjo, 36.
Ng’anjo received his salary on Monday but could not go home on the day and on the following day, he was seen at Dwangwa Trading Centre drinking beer.
According to police reports, later Ng’anjo thought of going home but he was totally drunk.
“On his way, he fell into one of the water canals of Illovo Sugar Estate Company. For he had no power to come out of it, and there was nobody to assist, he died,” Police reports indicate.
He was later seen by people while floating in the canal.
Postmortem conducted at Matiki Health Centre revealed that the death was caused by drowning due to intoxication.
The deceased hailed from Gonthako Village, Traditional Authority Mwabulabo in Mzimba district.
