The Directorate of Road Traffic and Safety Services says it is not going to give in to the demands of minibus drivers to soften traffic rules in the country.
The remarks follow protests by minibus drivers in Blantyre City on Friday against the new road traffic rules currently being enforced by the Traffic Police.
According to the Deputy Regional Traffic Officer for the south Alex Zimba, they will not accept the calls by drivers to soften the just implemented laws.
Zimba said the aim is not to restrain minibuses from operating but to protect lives though more lives have already been lost in road accidents which have hit the country.
He added that their department got shocked with the increase of the road accidents hence the need to have stiff laws.
Zimba continued by saying that if anyone does not want to be a victim of the laws, they need to just follow the rules when driving.
On Friday, drivers in the commercial city of Blantyre protested against the newly implemented laws.
The newly implemented rules include that no minibus should be seen carrying any kind of goods, even a single bag of maize. The police have also hiked fines for various offences.

I wonder why stiffing laws more especially on carrying goods only on min buses yet many lives that has been claimed on our roads especially recently have involved big buses and few min buses (if any) .This might show that you are targeting the min buses where yourselves the cops find your bread and butter.

If this country is to progress stick to the laws you have implemented but by back tracking you have to know that you are putting your self on risk. Lets love our country leave politicians aside.Look at Southern Africa, Malawi is the least developed in all angles of development because one element (politicians)

A sign of poverty ! Firstly nothing will change wat is gona happen rather is tht police will get bribes, from drivers who will olwes exceed the capacity. Why don’t u consider bad roads being other reasons fr accidents???

Big up our police dont even bother to soften the new laws. We have lost our beloved ones because of neglegency of drivers. Let me find chance on this. There are so many traffic cops who likes to be bribed to let offenders go and by doing so u are the ones who influence accidents on the road. I could be happy too if the law could be implemented of such cops to face law immediately. Though i know the law is there already but the courts need proof that the cop was bribed so its difficult for someone to take a photo when the cop asks for a bribe. Anyway, well done our police keep it up!!!!
