A 42-year-old Indian woman has been admitted at Mzuzu Central Hospital after sustaining wounds from a fire that gutted her house on Saturday night at Mapale area in Mzuzu.

According to Mzuzu Police deputy publicist Cecelia Mfune, the victim has been identified as Nasim Mirza from India.

The publicist said the victim’s husband, Mirza Salim Beg, reported that the woman was alone in the house sleeping while other family members had gone for evening prayers.

It is said that whilst she was in deep sleep, the house caught fire and this development prompted a watchman and other well-wishers to break the house’s windows in a bid to rescue the woman.

Mfune added that efforts to quench the inferno yielded nothing as the fire had already embodied the whole house leaving everything in ashes.

Medical report indicates that the Indian lady suffered burn wounds on the face, back, hands and legs.

Meanwhile, the value of the damaged property has not yet been assessed. Police have since instituted investigations to establish the cause of fire.
