Saenda names Queens squad for African Championship

Malawi Queens coach Griffin Saenda has named the squad that will travel to Uganda for the African Netball Championship involving six nations which is set to kick off on June 24.

Kukoma Diamonds dominate the 12-member squad with four of their players being selected.

The Queens head to the African showpiece.

The squad also includes captain Joanna Kachilika and United Kingdom based Joyce Mvula who plays for Manchester Thunder.

However, key player Mwai Kumwenda will miss the tournament due to club commitments.

The Malawi National Netball Team’s first game at the competition will be against Zimbabwe on Sunday, June 25 and the next day they will play hosts Uganda.

The Queens will then play Namibia on June 27 before facing Zambia on June 28 and Botswana on June 29.

The opening encounter of the tournament will be between the hosts Uganda and Botswana on Saturday.

Defenders: Joanna Kachilika (captain) plays for Thunder Queens, Wezzie Mzemba plays for Kukoma Diamonds, Colleta Mwalilino plays for Civo Nets, Martha Dambo plays for Thunder Queens and Julie Sambo who plays for Blue Eagles sisters.

Centres: Bridget Kumwenda who plays for Kukoma Diamonds, Tigresses’ Beatrice Mpinganjira and Thandie Galeta who plays for Thunder Queens.

Shooters are Jane Chimaliro (vice captain) who plays for Civo nets, Joyce Mvula plays for Manchester Thunder in United Kingdom and Kukoma Diamonds’ Alinafe Kamwala and Jessie Mazengera Sanudi.
