Two men have died after drowning in separate incidents in Nkhotakota district.

Nkhunga Police spokesperson Laban Makalani said the first incident happened on Saturday when a man identified as Thomson Chikwenga, 35, drowned in Dwangwa River at Kakuyu area in Traditional Authority Kanyenda in the district.

“The man swam into deep waters while following his canoe which had been blown away from the shore of the river by heavy winds,” said Makalani.

Following the incident, the man went missing and his body was found on Wednesday.

He hailed from Kakuyu Village, Traditional Authority Kanyenda in Nkhotakota.

Makalani told Malawi24 that the second incident happened on June 5 at Mphangwe village, in the same Traditional Authority Kanyenda where a man identified as Isaac Nathan drowned in Bua River.

According to Makalani, the man left his home and went to the river to fetch elephant grass.

“His relatives got surprised after noticing that the man was not coming back,” he said.

Following the development, the relatives started searching and on June 6 his body was found floating in the river.

Postmortem conducted at Nsenjere health centre revealed that the death was caused by suffocation.

He hailed from Mphangwe village, Traditional Authority Kanyenda in Nkhotakota.

Nkhunga Police Station has since appealed to members of the general public to observe general safety rules to prevent drowning.

The police have also advised people to use life jackets when swimming, sailing or fishing and to avoid swimming in deep areas.
