Gustave Kaliwo’s call for an emergency convention has sparked anger among Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Members of Parliament (MPs) who have demanded that the MCP general secretary should be fired from the party.
Speaking during a presser on Monday in Lilongwe, the MPs faulted Kaliwo for causing divisions among MCP members following his call to have an emergency convention on 7 July.
Kaliwo was reported to have faulted leadership style of MCP’s president Lazarus Chakwera hence a need to have the convention.
But 48 MCP legislators have opposed Kaliwo’s suggestion arguing the party has been split due to his decision.
Leader of the MCP lawmakers at the media conference Richard Chimwendo Banda of Dowa East said the party enjoys the leadership of Chakwera.
“We can’t tolerate it anymore we want the secretary general Gustave Kaliwo to resign or he if fails NEC should fire him, what he is doing is causing confusion, the party is doing well on the ground, Dr Lazarus Chakwera is doing well,” said Chimwendo Banda.
Meanwhile Kaliwo is yet to comment on the matter.
The main opposition MCP has been experiencing internal fighting that has stayed for a while as some members are dissatisfied with the leadership of the party.
The political shakeup witnessed some members calling for an early convention as they argued the future is to be determined by ushering of new leadership.
