A political analyst in the country has suggested that names of Members of Parliament (MPs) who do not attend parliamentary proceedings should be made public.

This is coming at a time when it has been established that many MPs deliberately miss the deliberations even though they receive allowances in advance.

Wonderful Mkhutche: The absentees need to be put to shame.

Speaking in an interview with Malawi24, one of the political scientists in the country Wonderful Mkhutche said since there is a live radio broadcast of Parliamentary sessions, names of legislators who are absent should be read out.

“Members of Parliament should understand that people trust them. They need to represent people in ideas as well as physical presence. We now have live radio broadcasts. For MPs that have not given excuse for their absence, they need to be named for their constituents to know the kind of person they chose to represent them,” said Mkhutche.

He added that the conduct of the MPs shows that people are not being represented in the House since legislators take messages from their constituents to the national stage.
