Makata primary school pupils from Ndirande in Malawi’s commercial capital Blantyre are marching in protest to a strike by their teachers.

The teachers’ sit-in which started on June 5 aims to force government to pay the teachers their 2016-2017 leave grants.

The protesting pupils are going to Nyambadwe where they will be joined by students at HHI primary school who are also victims of the sit-in.

After being joined by HHI pupils, the group will march towards Blantyre District Commissioner’s (DC) office.

The pupils will at the DC’s office explain their worries and ask for immediate action on the current teachers’ sit-in claiming they are disappointed that they are not learning.

This is not the first time for pupils in Blantyre to go to the streets as CI pupils last year did the same after a teachers’ sit-in.

Meanwhile, parents in the country have through one of the local radios, threatened to go to streets as well to force authorities to act immediately on the ongoing sit-in.

In a phone in program on Times radio, parents said they are worried that their children are not learning and said they want a quick response on the matter.

There is also fear that this year’s Malawi School Certificate of Education examinations might be postponed due to the current countrywide sit-in.
