The Malawi Government through the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development has warned council secretariats against unscrupulous people masquerading as senior officers of the ministry who demand money from the councils.

The warning follow reports of people who visit council secretariats in the country demanding money collected at the council level.

In a letter addressed to councils signed by the secretary for the ministry Stuart Ligomeka, the ministry has warned the secretariat against giving payment to any person claiming to be senior officers.

“Whilst condemning the unscrupulous behavior, the ministry would like to advise all council staff not to entertain their request and report such fraudsters to police when approached by such people,” reads part of the letter made available to Malawi24.

The letter has since urged controlling officers for the councils to ensure that all workers are aware of the development. For a while the country has registered cases of people defrauding council secretariats by demanding money in the name of being officials from the ministry of local government and rural development.
