Treza Namathanga Senzani has died.

Former Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism, Treza Namathanga Senzani has died, Malawi24 has learnt.

She died today at Mwaiwathu Hospital in Lilongwe, according to reports.

Family members are yet to make a statement on this issue.

She was jailed in 2014 sentenced to three years and nine months imprisonment on offences of money laundering and theft respectively.

She was however let out of prison in October this year having portrayed  a ‘good character’ when she was behind the bars. Her jail term was slated to end October 6, 2017.

She had  pleaded guilty to stealing around $150,000 (63 million kwacha) from state coffers, part of a broader swindle worth at least $30 million and was convicted on her own guilty plea.

She became the first convict sentenced out of the more than 50 people arrested in connection with the fracas.

The scandal saw donors withdrawing their support to Malawi amid similar revelations – this time led by civil servants where billions of kwachas went uncounted for in a scandal better known as Cashgate.

Senzani was apprehended in 2013 having issued two Cheques to her own company, which according to police never had the provision of goods or services to the government.

But there is a saying that goes and i quote ” two wrongs cannot make a right ” cashgate interrupted a lot of service provisions in the country and she happened to be among those perpetrators who were brought to books and i hear she confessed and handed back some of the stolen money, now thats reaping what she sowed. I am not advocating that people who breach the provisions of the constitution should not be brought under the luminous shade of justice, on the contrary, the system has in place a way to ensure everyone who breaks the law faces prescribed consequences and that in itself is essential for an absolutely functioning society. At this rate, I wish to make it clear that i believe the people who are in our prisons for various reasons including cashgate deserve our respect because they are human too even though they are not perfect which is intrinsically what makes us human (imperfections)..

I base my argument on the fickleness of human thinking which is responsible for the decisions that people make in their day to day lives.. Mind you before cashgate drugs were running out in hospitals, roads were potholed, admarc had at times no sufficient supply of maize, schools had no necessary learning materials, etc.. Cashgate didnt bring these problems up from nowhere but it simply opened our eyes and pointed at a hole where our public funds were being drained.. Coming back to the issue in question, I now repeat my question; what do you consider to be the most atrocious crime that one can commit in this country or world at large.

I am however, expressing my opinion based on my personal beliefs and values, that brings into the picture the beauty of democracy which allows all of us to exercise independent thinking and hold whichever views we might desire provided they dont infringe upon the rights of others. you think these people deserve death and perhaps hell as well, while I think they shud be given a second chance and an opportunity for “salvation”. I remember the story about the adulterous woman who was brought to Jesus Christ by the Pharisees to be stoned to death. Jesus Christ said to those who assembled that those who had never sinned should be the first to cast stones, well we know how that story ended and no one lifted a finger to cast the first stone. According to God sin is sin. if you keep nine commandments and then break one the bible say you are guilty of them all. Imagine if you try and avoid killing, stealing, covetousness, etc but you disrespect your parents then you are guilty of murder, theft idoltry and all other sins thats according to the bible (James 2:10)…. I repeat, am not and i have never endorsed cashgate or any other such plot meant to enrich the elite while masses are suffering but i can never speak ill of Treaser’s death cuz there is a judgement day specifically meant for that..

    26. yes Nemar. every sort of criminal must go to jail be it a sex offender, a thief, a murder etc… But these people though they are branded as evil, they must still be respected thats why punishing criminals by hanging them on gallows was abolished and death penalty is becoming obsolete and a thing of the past in most parts of the world. Even here in Malawi death penalty was abolished in the late 90s. by giving them a second chance i dont mean they shouldn’t be jailed and be left scot free, no i want them to get just prison sentences in proportion to their crimes cuz jail is for reformation of behavior so that the people can come back into society later on with changed behavior and mindset.

They say Malawi is a God fearing nation yet the people cant forgive the transgressions of others when the bible says in (Isaiah 1:18) that though your sins be red as scarlet, they shall be white as snow and though they be red as crimson, they shall be as wool. There is no sin so great that God cant forgive then why shud we take it upon ourselves to send people to hell? Thats why most Christians are branded as hypocrites, preaching love in words yet in deeds doing the direct opposite. The woman in question went to jail and faced the consequences of theft. Now that she has died can’t we at once forget her grave mischief and treat her to a peaceful farewell? What ethical standards do you use to uphold such views as regarding offenders? an eye for an eye? Our religion is simply used to keep up with appearances when in fact we denied the power of God intentionally. Forgiveness is not easy. you have read the story of a man who after being forgiven a considerable amount of debt by his master, grabbed his fellow by the neck demanding what the friend owed him. The master then was extremely angered that he took him to gnash teeth in prison until he pays back in full what he owed him (Matthew 18:23-35). I can go on and on but I have no power whatsoever to influence your mind on issues such as the one we are tabling here. But i would like to make it clear that forgiveness is not letting the offenders free but treating them with respect even if they are in jail. I rest my case.
