The Mangochi second grade magistrate court has sentenced three men to 10 years imprisonment with hard labour each for breaking into a house and stealing items worth K300,000.

The three have been identified as Asiki Winesi Chombo, 32, of Budu village, Medison John, 32, of Mikundi village and Lifa Shaibu, 30, of Budu village, all from Traditional Authority Bwananyambi in Mangochi.

cuffsProsecutor Efford Kamphonje told the court that on the night of August 5 this year the criminals armed with sharp knives, panga knives, and metals bars broke into the house of Raphael Kalisoni in the district.

“When Kalisoni was fast asleep together with his two relatives, they heard the robbers breaking the front door,” said Kamphonje.

In no time the criminals managed to break into the house and they threatened to kill the three occupants if they shouted for help. The thugs then got away with assorted property worth K300,000 and left.

The matter was reported at Masuku Police Unit who visited the scene of crime and started their investigations immediately.

In the process, they managed to recover one of the mobile phones stolen during the robbery and this led to the arrest of the three in early November 2016. The thugs were charged with robbery with violence which is contrary to section 301 of penal code.

The criminals pleaded not guilty to the offence and this forced the state to parade four witnesses including the manager.    Following the evidence, Second Grade Magistrate Pearson Mwanyali found the three guilty.

The prosecutor then asked the court to give the thugs a stiff punishment because people surrounding the area have been complaining about the increase in robberies.

When delivering judgment, Magistrate Mwanyali said people are working hard to get property and it’s very sad that there are some lazy Malawians who steal from the hardworkers. He then sentenced each of the thugs to 10 years imprisonment with hard labour.
