Branches of Chipiku Stores are evading tax by not issuing Malawians with electronic receipts, Malawi24 has learnt.

The Chipiku branches, it has been observed, are instead giving Malawians handwritten tickets for their purchases in a bid to avoid remitting Value Added Tax (VAT) already paid by the shoppers.

The handwritten receipts which Malawi24 has seen, show among other things the purchases customers have made, the amount of the purchase, and the name of the customers.

The receipts also have the word paid underlined and written in red ink.

The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) was not immediately available for comment but the tax collector has been encouraging registered Value Added Tax operators to purchase and use Electronic Fiscal Devices (EFD) which are used for remitting necessary taxes to the authority.

The authority also conducts campaigns to encourage Malawians to demand EFD receipts whenever they make a purchase.

  1. Mesa magets akumazima ndie receipt ituluka bwanj? Aaa.. Kumamvetsetsa mwamsanga znaz, go deeper aChipiku stores,,,, u r right

  2. Its better not to pay taxes than using our taxes to repay loans which you borrowed to construct substandard roads (roads which expire within a week) and steal the remaining. Poor government. Thumbs up Chipiku stors.

  3. you need to do more survey or research than what u have done so far.your report is baseless.Malawians are not stupid enought to accept this trash u so called a receipt.

  4. ndizoona……anytime ndingapte ku Chipiku kukagula ma Ream Papers samandipatsa cash sale…..amati anawathera/amayambira 15,000

  5. Stupid Malawians will accept not to be given the legal receipt.
Stupid Malawians will say, ‘where is the proof that that piece of paper is from Chipiku?’
Stupid Malawians will not repot this.

But they will be busy accusing their government about lack of necessary services they were supposed to receive from government. Which would have been provided using the same money they assisted an Indian idiot to divert.

  6. This is a lie is there proof it’s from chipiku? It can come from anywhere including our homes, if a person rot that as what, a recipt? Why not stamped without a holders name? And where can a person take such a recipt? No accountant can get that?

  7. I hate to say this… IT PAINS ME MOST WHEN PROFIT BASED INSTITUTIONS RUN BY FOREIGNERS ARE STEALING GOVT FUNDS…. EXPLOITATION BY FOREIGNERS MOSTLY INDIANS IS MORE PAINFUL as bonafide malawian citizens lets do something about it

    1. Yes pains, but I feel it has to start from you by being responsible enough by playing a role of citizens watch, and it’s not only Indians, how many ministers with businesses contribute to the government? As a government work you pay even for other who are considered not working but working only that not registered or captured. I therefore emplore everyone to be responsible enough and stop blaming others when you fail to do the right thing. From Zambian /Malawian

    2. i agree with u mr shadreck phiri…. but did u notice that naturally when you beat ur brother it carries less weight.. but what happens when you watch another person not related or far relation doing the same? from that i bet its naturally logical

    3. It is a question of where does an outsider get the strength of beating your brother in your presence, this people when they are coming to establish their businesses they are told our rules and they break the role because they see us do that. Let us be responsible then others will do the same.
