Lake Malawi dispute rages on.

One of the country’s political commentators has advised President Peter Mutharika to hold talks with Tanzanian President John Magufuli in order to resolve the two countries’ dispute over Lake Malawi.

The commentator Humphreys Mvula made the remarks following reports that Malawi has protested to the United Nations (UN) and the African Union (AU) over a new map being promoted by Tanzania showing that the East African nation owns part of the lake.

In an interview with Malawi24, Mvula expressed surprise that Mutharika, who talked tough during campaign when he said the lake is not negotiable, has not tried using bilateral talks to resolve the wrangle.

“What is surprising is Mutharika’s inability to pay a state visit to Tanzania where this issue can be discussed through bilateral talks,” said Mvula.

The political commentator also showed surprise that Malawi government has thought of approaching the UN and the AU on the matter.

Humpreys Mvula
Mvula: Questions the ideas of the Malawi Govt. on this issue.

“I do not know why Malawi government has taken these two options when the country has not been told about the results of the mediation efforts that were commenced during Joyce Banda regime,” said Mvula.

He further said that he does not believe the United Nations would help in solving the lake issue as it cannot side with one country.

Mvula suggested that if the country wants legal interpretation it needs to take the matter to an international court for intervention.

He however warned that even though Malawi has a good case,  it is hard for Tanzania to let go of the lake as now its citizens around the lake are benefiting through transportation and other socio-economic activities.

The Lake Malawi dispute started way back in the 1960s but the current wrangle began after Malawi awarded licences to various companies to search for oil and gas on the lake.

However, because it serves as a source of votes for politicians to flex their muscles that they will deliver the whole lake to Malawi, and they are given votes, all the best for you malawians as you waste your time, good luck!

Their soldiers seems to be numerous than ours but technically we are at better ranking according to UN peace keeping. It’s time to protect our land from these folks.

  47. We are to blame ourselves. we invited them to protect the lake from oil exploration. I heard some people from the north mentioning that on MIJ radio. we are reckless with our mouth when we feel politically frustrated. We don’t treat an issue with a patriotic approach. some people has been calling their region part of TZ.Now I don’t see anything wrong. are they going to finish the water from it? do we have our hotels and lodges on their side? is the water on our side less than that on their side? We are failing to deal with the problems we are facing in our country as one, instead pointing fingers, calling each other bad names, always calling our leaders failures since 1994.Do we expect others to respect us? Let’s think positive for our country, offer constructive criticism, this is our home.

  53. The good side of social media, is the liberty fools like you have; to degrade personalities, far above their IQ rating. Frustrated failures in life enjoy unprovoked castigation to validate themselves. What does a deliberately wrongly drawn map without infiltration have to do with a president.? Do you have any knowledge on border issues..? What you and your Mvula are suggesting are as childish as negotiating with another man on who owns your wife.
