The 25 man Malawi national under 20 football team has a lived safely in South Africa today for the Cosafa cup tournament which will be played in South Africa.

The 25 under20 squad is being led by the Malawi football association of Malawi second vice President, Othaniel Hara as head of delegation. Whereas the team has also traveled with Christopher Mwenegamba as a medical officer while Griffin Saenda as the teams team manager.

The Malawi national team under20 side was drawn in Group B which is regarded as group of death and they were drawn against Zimbabwe and Zambia in their group.

Whereas the host and defending champions South Africa have been paired with Lesotho, Swaziland and Botswana in group A, Group C contains Angola, Namibia, Seychelles and Mauritius while Group D has Mozambique, Comoros Islands and East African guest nation Rwanda, who will compete in the place for Madagascar.

The teams will play each other in a round- robin format with the teams that finishes top from each pool advancing to the semifinals of the competition.

But one twist is that the top teams in Group B and D after their second round matches they will play a third game as a crossover fixture between those two pools, to ensure that most competing sides get to play three times.

The top team in Group B will play the second team in Group D and vice versa to find the last two teams to advance to the semifinals.

The group stages matches will be played from the 7th to the 13 of December, whereas the semifinals will be played on 14th December, before the remaining teams enjoy a rest day.

The third place playoffs and the final will both be played on the 16th of December which is a public holiday in South Africa.

Meanwhile Malawi under20 team finished fourth in the COSAFA under20 championship tournament in Botswana in 2011 having not played in the previous two episodes of the tournament, and the team did not appear again in 2013.

Malawi’s eyes will be on their new under 20 mentor Phiri as they will be looking forward to see if the coach will bring home their first ever COSAFA cup trophy.

Malawi reached the finals of the tournament in 2003 but they were beaten by the Chipolopolo Under20 side in the decider.

The Flames Under20 side made it out of the group stages five years ago but lost 4-2 to Angola in the semis before being beaten 1 nil by the host nation Botswana in the third place play offs.

COSAFA will be staging this competition for the first time since 2013. The Malawi national Under 20 football team that has travelled to South Africa for the Cosafa tournament; 1.
