… make u-turn on water project

People in Mulanje have apologised to minister of agriculture, irrigation and water development George Chaponda for stoning him when he went to the area to tour the site for a water project.

The residents have also promised that they will support government on the project in which Blantyre Water Board wants to tap water from Mulanje Mountain.

Mulanje residents chased Chaponda a few month ago.

At first, the Mulanje residents were against the project saying the project will not benefit people in the area but those living in Blantyre.

Thus they stoned the minister and chased him away when he went to the area a few months ago.

But last month President Peter Mutharika launched the water project promising people in the district that it will create jobs and they will also benefit from the tapped water.

Following the launch, Concerned Citizens for the Protection of Mulanje Mountain (CCPMM) had a meeting with Chaponda to end their differences.

Spokesperson for CCPMM David Majeweta said they have now realised that the water project is important to them as well as people in the country.

”We decided to meet the minister of agriculture, irrigation and water development to apologise to him on what the communities around the area did to the minister,” said Majeweta.

He added that the meeting was a success as they have ended their differences and the project is progressing well.

According to Majeweta, they are not against the project being initiated by government and they will support the project.

Commenting on the matter, minister of agriculture said he has accepted the apology by Mulanje residents and the project will go on well.
