First it was Escom United in 2012 and now Civo Service United is edging towards the same direction following another home defeat at home to Kamuzu Barracks on Saturday afternoon to remain second from bottom with four games to play.
Kelvin Hanganda’ first half strike inspired the Lilongwe based Soldiers to a hard fought 1-nil victory over struggling Civil Servants to dislodge Blue Eagles at the top with 52 points from 27 matches. The Soldiers meant business as they attacked from the word go but Civo’s defence was too stubborn to unlock in the opening minutes of the half.
At the other end, the hosts’ play maker Nelson Kangunje had his long range drive well saved by Leman Nthala in goals for the visitors.
But just when everybody thought the teams will go into the halftime break goalless, KB broke Civo’ hearts by scoring in an unbelievable situation through Hanganda who pounced on a defensive mistake bt the Servants, 1-0.
After the recess, Civo pressed harder in search for the much needed goals to save their season but nothing was happening for them. With Premier Bet Wizards being mauled by Azam Tigers at Kamuzu Stadium, a win for the hosts would have reduced the gap but the Servants were no match to the Soldiers pace inside the field of play.
Some of the home fans were in tears as the clock was fast approaching to 90 minutes, with Civo’s interim coach Charles Nyirenda throwing every dice to try to snatch at-least a draw from the match but Kamuzu Barracks were in no mood of allowing them to score.
At the other end, Hanganda wrestled past three Civo defenders but his final decision was awful, firing off the goal mouth with the goalkeeper already beaten.
The home team had some few chances but none went into the empty net and after 90 minutes of play, it ended 1-0 in favor of the visitors who took their tally to 52 with some few games left to play.
As for Civo, they must win all the remaining matches if they are to survive the chop and at the same time, hoping to see Dwangwa United, Wizards and Karonga
