Police in Mangochi district have arrested a 30 year-old man for chopping palms of a man whom he was suspecting of having an affair with his wife.
The suspect identified as Grem Louis committed the crime two weeks ago but he was at large until Friday when police apprehended him.
On the day of the incident, the victim Michael Alfred was cycling from Namiyasi to Samama village which is along Monkey-Bay-Mangochi road. As Alfred reached Naming’unde Bridge the suspect emerged from nowhere and attacked him.
“He chopped off both his palms using a panga knife and ran away leaving the victim on the spot lying unconsciously,” Mangochi Police spokesperson.
Amina Daudi said. The victim was later found by a passerby who took him to the hospital.
Last week, well-wishers tipped police in Mangochi that the suspect was hiding in Mwanza at one of his relative’s house.
The police went there and arrested the suspect on Friday. After being questioned, he revealed that he hacked Alfred because the victim was having an affair with his wife.
Meanwhile, the suspect has been charged with grievous harm which is contrary to section 241 of Penal code and he will appear in court soon.
Mangochi Police have since advised the general public not to take matters into their own hands and that they should rather report or seek advice before doing wrong actions to avoid committing serious crimes.
Grem hails from Kafulumira village, Traditional Authority Mponda in Mangochi district.
