Man jailed for seven years over firearm
The Midima magistrate court has sentenced a 27 year-old man to seven years imprisonment with hard labour for possessing a firearm without a license.
The man has been identified as Mphatso Sitima who was arrested in September after police received a tip-off that he was keeping a rifle at his home at Manje Township in Blantyre. When the law enforcers went to the house they found the firearm hidden inside a Sofa.
They charged Sitima for being found in possession of a firearm without a licence or authority which is contrary to section 16 CAP 14:08 of Firearm Act. In court, Sitima pleaded guilty and asked for leniency.
When passing judgement, His Worship Benedictus Chisakamile said the offence is serious hence the need to slap the convict with seven years in prison to deter would be offenders.
Sitima hails from Kamwendo village T/A Chikowi in Zomba.
