It was all but a mission impossible for armed robbers who stormed opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President Lazarus Chakwera’s residence in Lilongwe only to meet the prowess of security guards who chased them around Area 9 in a cat and rat chase.

Malawi24 understands that the robbers hit Chakwera’s house in Area 9 on Tuesday night.

Chakwera: Robbers stormed his house.

It is said that the private security guards who work at Chakwera’s house managed to contain the robbers and in the chase the armed robbers shot at them- a thing which saw their unknown plan foiled.

Meanwhile, MCP says the matter is of big concern to the party as they fear the robbers might have wanted to kill the opposition leader who has recently been very critical of the current regime.

MCP’s second deputy Secretary General, Eisenhower Mkaka has since said MCP will make sure the matter is investigated.

‘Armed thugs invaded the house of our president in Area 9 but we thank God that our private guards were alert as they engaged in a running battle with them when they were trying to break into our president’s house,” Mkaks is quoted as having said by the local media.

According to Mkaka, law enforcers who guard the house did not turn up on the night, a thing which has raised concerns on the life of the leader of opposition.

Police are yet to comment on the matter.

Earlier this year, unknown thieves broke into the house of ex Malawi President Joyce Banda in Nkhatabay District.

Other high profile robberies are daring thieves who raided the house of United Democratic Front (UDF) President Atupele Muluzi as well as Malawi’s Vice President Saulos Chilima.

The insecurities have been blamed on lack of the implementation of the shoot to kill policy which had reportedly seen the dwindling of crime during the era of the late Bingu wa Mutharika.
