Open Distance Learning (ODL3) and Initial Primary Teaching Education (IPTE8) teachers have asked government to pay them their salary arrears. The teachers claim that they have been teaching since April without being paid their monthly salaries.

Speaking to Malawi24, a concerned teacher who did not want to be named complained that life has been tough due to the lack of finances to support themselves. The source said that lack of salaries has demoralized them and they are not working as efficiently and effectively as before.

“In fact life has been tough, and it’s a thing that has demoralized our effort. In the beginning, we used to work hard,” the source explained.

The concerned teacher further expressed that government cannot claim that it is not aware of the hardships teachers are facing in this country.

The source revealed that they are in the midst of discussing the way forward on matter.

She however assured that if the government fail to meet their demands by the end of this month, the teachers will take action.

She also warned that government should not expect the standard of the country’s education to improve if teachers continue to be exploited in the country.
