The National Statistics Office (NSO) says statistics play a major role in the economic development of any country.
Malawi’s Commissioner of Statistics Mercy Kanyuka made the remarks as the country commemorated this year’s Africa’s Statistics Day. The day is celebrated annually on November 18 and this year’s theme was “strengthening economic statistics for regional integration”.
Kanyuka said there is need to strengthen statistics so that the general public is aware of the role statistics play in the economy.
“The day of the African Statistics day is there to promote awareness on the role statistics play in the society and make sure that economic integration is achieved,” said Kanyuka.
According to Kanyuka, statistics help in calculation of Consumer Price Index as well as inflation which are important pieces of information for decision makers.
She added that at the moment they are making strides to make sure that decision makers know the role statistics play in a society.
Kanyuka further said that the theme of this year moves together with economic integration as Malawi is part of regional bodies such as Southern African Development Community (SADC) as well African Union (AU) who are promoting integration.
