Education authorities in Mzimba district have expressed worry over absenteeism of teachers saying the misconduct has contributed to poor results in this year’s Primary School Leaving Certificate of Education (PSLCE) exams.

It is said that Mzimba South has performed badly in the recent PSCLE exams in Malawi and is positioned at number 33 out of 34 educational districts with 62.5 percent.

Speaking to the media during graduation ceremony for 64 Female Teachers at DAPP Teachers Training College in Mzimba, District Education Manager for Mzimba South Fanwell Chiwowa said teachers’ negligence is compromising quality of education in the district.

Chiwowa blamed teachers in the district for spending weeks in towns accessing salaries while the learners in their schools are left in the cold. He added that mobile market is also a challenge in the area as teachers leave classes and go for shopping.

“It has been noted as a tendency, when teachers have gone to access their salaries in towns and at the Boma, they spend weeks leaving their classes with no one. This tendency is affecting the quality of education in the district,” he said.

Chiwowa further urged the graduating teachers to be exemplary in their work and be ready to work in rural communities where life is not all that simple.

    1. Hahahaha well said bro, #teaching…under the tree, #month end… peanuts!! Don’t blame them, they are working in accordance with the working conditions and packages.

  9. Not necessarily absenteeism of teacher. There are alot of reasons or challenges. 1 theexodus of young men to South Africa(ku Joni) 2. Distances to Trading centres to access banks. 3. CDSS are few and far apart. 4. Understaffing in most Rural areas. 5. Poor infrastructure. 6. alot of beer being sold near schools. 7. inadequate text books…. just to mention afew and lack of motivation. plus 9. most tachers are teaching in schools of their birth places, grown there the only move made is TTC.

  10. Teachers and other civil servants are low paid they do receive change no wonder they are not committed to their work.

  11. Government should impose payment for work done, this way teachers will spend more time thinking about the students than themselves,

  12. You must give them their salaries in a good time to avoid all those problems, and you have to increase they salaries also, a teacher must be happy, its only in malawi where teachers are considered as slaves, but you expect students to do well, it kills our education standards. A happy teacher the good results we might have, how do you expect a teacher to produce good results to his / her students while teaching with that mood of unhappy of his / her payment. First honour them with good salaries, houses, and good working conditions, this will make them to be commited with their job!

  13. thats the results of lack of seriousness of govt to honour teachers by giving them LG, good and timely salary packages as well as motivate them. kkkk go teachers go

    1. That’s not the issue. LG is not the issue here. Give the teacher some incentives such as promotion, opportunity to up grade, better salaries and good housing. If not then just ask them to work specifically for there time period. Teachers should just come to work place e during there period

  14. full mouth to denou!ce ,why not concentrate on the main reasons.pay them well and intime ,they will not absent for no reason
