Nine year-old boy drowns in Nkhotakota

A nine-year-old boy has died in Nkhotakota after drowning at Kaombe River in the district.

Nkhotakota Police Public Relations Officer Williams Kaponda said the incident happened on Sunday when the deceased Shalom Dalenga together with his elder brother went to Kaombe River to water their vegetable garden.

drowning“When the victim wanted to draw water, he suddenly slipped and fell in Kaombe River, his brother cried for help but the rescuers’ response was late to serve the deceased,” said Kaponda.

Postmorterm conducted by medical workers from Nkhotakota district hospital showed that death was due to suffocation.

This comes barely two weeks after two kids also drowned in the district. Kaponda said drowning cases have recently increased in Nkhotakota district.

“We have recently been rocked with drowning cases. In just weeks we have had two and this one brings it to three,” said Kaponda.

“The unfortunate part of it, only kids have been involved. Parents and guardian are strongly advised to take extra care of their kids,” said Kaponda.

The deceased Shalom Dalenga hailed from Mtumbula village, Traditional Authority Mphonde in Nkhotakota district.
