Police in Machinga on Wednesday arrested eleven Congolese nationals for illegal entry into Malawi.
According to Machinga police spokesperson Davie Sulumba who confirmed the development with Malawi24 on Thursday, the immigrants – six males and five females – were dropped by an unknown driver at Mangochi turnoff in the township of Liwonde.
Sulumba identified the immigrants as 22 year-old Hussen Ibaru, Ibaru Husssen, 61, Jackie Ibaru, 35, Akiri Ibaru, 20, Rahid Ibaru aged 31, Master Ibaru, 30, Moshi Ebaru, 46, Phiri Brelishe, 12, Asele Ebaru aged 15 and 8 year-old Moshe Ebaru, all from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
“We received information from well-wishers that the immigrants were dropped by an unknown Transporter at Mangochi turnoff and the community around the area was suspicious of them,” Sulumba said.
He further said the law enforcers acted after receiving the information as they rushed to the place and found the immigrants.
The immigrants who were also in possession of travelling bags full of assorted clothes, mattress, pots and plates said they are in the country for a special tour but the explanation did not satisfy the men in uniform.
Currently the immigrants are being detained at Liwonde police Post where they are waiting to be repatriated.
