The Malawi Police Service on Monday started a two-day leadership and responsibility training course for sergeants in Nkhotakota to help them adhere with the rank’s responsibilities.

According to Nkhotakota Police Public Relations Officer Williams Kaponda, the 50 sergeants who are participating in the training will also learn their day to day responsibilities in their respective working areas.

The course is being facilitated by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Mrs. Eviresta Chisale and Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mr. Ken P Wetcha, all from Central Region Training Centre (CRTC) in Lilongwe.

In her remarks when she opened the training, Chisale thanked the Inspector General of Malawi Police for organizing the training and asked the sergeants utilise the opportunity.

“As sergeants you need to know your responsibilities. This will make you work effectively and perform to the fullest as expected,” she said. “Knowing your responsibility makes you perform to the standard. Some mistakes we have experienced are due to lack of such trainings.”

Chisale also expressed hope that the police sergeants will fully participate during the training so that the course achieves its intended purposes.

On his part, Nkhotakota police officer in-charge Timothy Phiri warned the participants that he will now be expecting more from them.

“You were sergeants by rank but constables by knowledge. This is your time to prove that indeed you deserve the rank. I expect more changes after undergoing this knowledge equipping training course. This will be observed and appreciated back at work. Prove to us that you are more than sergeants but sub inspectors in waiting,” Phiri said.

Sergeants from the mother station Nkhotakota police station and those from police units namely Mwansambo, Benga, Mkaika and Sani in the district are attending the training.

Nkhotakota police station covers from Chiluwa to Bua and has six traditional authorities while the other part is for Nkhunga police station.

Similar trainings will also be conducted in other police stations all over the country and so far sergeants from Kasungu, Mponera, Ntchisi, Mchinji, Lilongwe and Dowa have been trained.
