Authorities in Mzimba have expressed worry over high libido (sexual desire) among men in the district.

Mzimba district council chief executive officer Thomas Chirwa said the uncontrollable sex drive is contributing to the rise in cases of rape and defilement.

He conceded that Mzimba is topping the list of districts with the highest number of rape and defilement cases in the country.

Rape“Only if men controlled themselves, cases of defilement would have lessened in the country and Mzimba,” he said.

According to Chirwa, it is worrisome to learn that some very aged men rape girls as young as four.

“Why should this be the case? Our daughters are not safe we need to do something. These cases are really going out of hand,” he added.

On his part, deputy commissioner of Mzimba police, Louis Chigadila, confirmed that his office has received about 50 cases of sexual abuse this year alone.

“The worst this year. We have tried and we are still trying to eradicate this malpractice,” said Chigadila.

Meanwhile, the Mzimba district council in conjunction with the Malawi police has established a committee which will be protecting children from such malpractices.

According to Chirwa, the committee is expected to work very tirelessly to protect children in Mzimba.
