Malawi IDs to slash govt spending -Mutharika

Malawi President Peter Mutharika has applauded the initiative of having National Identity Cards (IDs) saying the country is to save money.

Speaking at the launch of the National IDs program on Thursday, Mutharika said the initiative will curb malpractices such as inclusion of ghost workers in civil service that have been draining financial resources from the government and it will also help save public funds spent on other initiatives.

“The National Identity Cards will save significant amount of money that would be spent on voter registration, ” said Mutharika.

He added that the initiative will also help to bring better organization in the country.

Speaking earlier, United States ambassador to Malawi Virginia Palmer congratulated the country for the initiative saying national IDs are essential to public sector reforms and can help in education, health, and electoral systems Malawi government came with a solution of having national IDs following serious concerns raised in the period Malawians were without the documents.

Among the issues, Malawi has seen citizens from neighbouring countries sharing public services with Malawians under the cost of Malawi’s cash box.

With the launch of the program, government hopes that by next year Malawi will be registering every birth in the country.

  48. The initiative seems tangible, all we need to know is how this will roll out. How much will it cost,its timeframe, and all the protocols one will have to go through in acquiring it.

    1. That means who have no id no government help like schools they will take everyone who have that. Those they don’t they have to pay for school that is where government will save money. But not next year or five in seven years time you will see the benefit

    2. Of all the positive ideas that may come with the introduction of these ID’s, my biggest worry lies on the fact that these ID’s have an expiry date,which means the government will be milking out the poor Malawians for ever!
      We cannot keep on paying for a single item over and over again, and how much actually will it cost, coz looking at the price of passports, it has rocketed beyond doubt!

    What for?
    Dziko losauka ngati lino.
    It’s raising alot of questions in many.
    And I think there can’t be any sober justification for this.
    That’s the only flop I think.
    Otherwise, thought mapanga zinthu mwachidodo, I personally feel when we initiate something, it’s always of good quality. This is one of the best national IDs I have ever seen.
