Missing Malawian student with albinism found safe and alive
A secondary school student at Masongola Secondary School and living with albinism who was feared to have been abducted in Zomba has been found safe and alive in the city, Malawi24 can confirm.
The Form One student identified as Overton Mike was reported to be missing on Saturday after going out with friends.
But a statement that has been signed by Eastern Region Police spokesperson Joseph Sauka shows that the 17 year-old student was found on Monday at his friend’s house at Matawale Town within Zomba city.
“The boy was not abducted or kidnapped in any form as he was at his friend’s house and is in good health,” Sauka said in the statement.
“The boy has since been sent back to School after counseling and as Police we are assuring the general public including those with albinism that we are doing everything possible to provide maximum security to all and no one should live in fear,” he added.
During the first eight months of this year Malawi was gripped by a wave of killings and abductions of people with albinism. Statistics show that this year alone 80 cases related to crimes against people with albinism have been registered in the country.
