Like other people wishing to celebrate motherly love, they made it to Lake Malawi not knowing they are to go back in coffins after drowning in Salima district on Sunday afternoon.
Salima police has confirmed that four people drowned in the district as they were celebrating mother’s day.
Spokesperson for the police in the district Gift Chitowe disclosed that among the four, three are men and one a woman. The four travelled from Lilongwe to the lakeshore side to seek fun.
“It was yesterday when we received reports that some four people were missing and we mobilized locals to search for them but we didn’t get them,” said Chitowe.
He added that the bodies were later found floating near Boaboa cottage in Sengabay.
The police have since sent the bodies to Salima district hospital for postmortem.
In another accident, six people have died after a minibus they were traveling in overturned due to a burst tyre along Lilongwe-Salima road on Sunday.
Confirming on the local press, Dowa police spokesperson Richard Kaponda said three people died at Katengeza village where the accident occurred while three others died upon arriving at the hospital.
Kaponda added that the driver lost control of the minibus registration number NN7257 due to a burst tyre when they were traveling from Mother’s Day celebrations.
