It’s a four horse race!

Bullets vs Mafco

The 2016 Super League season championship race took another twist on Sunday afternoon when Nyasa Big Bullets and Silver Strikers failed to claim maximum points in their assignments, allowing Blue Eagles and Mafco FC back into the contention for the top prize.

Victory for the two sides would have moved them three points ahead of Eagles and Mafco but failure to claim maximum points on Sunday opened the race to four teams.

The Central Bankers were held to a goalless draw away to Epac FC while Bullets came from behind thrice to draw 3-3 against Red Lions at Kamuzu Stadium.

The result saw Silver Strikers extending their lead at the top to a point while Bullets sits second with 40 points from 22 games.

Eagles are third with 39 points from 21 games while Mafco are fourth with 38 points from the same number of games.

Both Eagles and Mafco have got an opportunity to dislodge Silver at the top of the summit if they win their matches on Saturday and with the Bankers playing against their cross town rivals, the race for the title could take another level by the end of this week.

This will be the closely contested season, reminding Malawians of the 2012 season where the Bankers and the current league champions tied at 58 points each but the former won the league for having superior goal difference.

For the past two seasons, Bullets won the league with land mark points, having won it in 2014 with 62 points, 8 points ahead of the second placed Moyale Barracks and in 2015 season, Bullets defended the league in style by accumulating 66 points, 10 ahead of runners up Mafco FC.

However, with the way things are in the ongoing season, it’s very unlikely for the contenders to accumulate more than 60 points this season.

Below is the log table as of 17th October 2016:
