The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has pledged to continue supporting Malawi in the fight against obstetric fistula in Malawi.
Speaking at Bwaila Hospital in Lilongwe where UNFPA officials met women, the organization’s representative Dr Dan Odalo assured that they will continue supporting Malawian women suffering from the condition.
He added that they are happy because out of 90 women who were at the event, 70 were successfully cured from the disease.
“We are very happy with this development and we know for sure that fistula will become history in Malawi,” he said.
Odalo pointed out lack of sexual reproductive health and civic education as some of the factors contributing to the condition.
He therefore asked the women to be civic educated as a way of reducing cases of fistula disease in the country.
During the event, the women also learnt how they can involve themselves in various social economic activities and how they can become entrepreneurs.
Obstetric fistula is a hole between the birth canal and the bladder or the rectum caused by prolonged, obstructed labour, without access to timely, high quality medical treatment.
It leaves women leaking urine, faeces or both and often leads to chronic medical problems, depression, social isolation and poverty.
