The Malawi government through the ministry of sports has disclosed that the Bingu National Stadium will not be opened this month as earlier communicated.

According to the minister responsible Henry Mussa, government still need money to complete the stadium project.

Mussa said government needed over K600 million which it has luckily already sourced for the completion of the stadium.

The minister further pleaded with the general public to be patient on the matter saying people have waited long and they cannot fail to wait for the opening of stadium in the coming two to three months.

“We have been waiting since the genesis of the project until to date, so we need also to wait for some time. The thing is we have to make sure that all the technical aspects in the stadium are intact and in good condition to be used,” said Mussa.

He added that the money which they have already sourced is for floodlights and also for a main pipe which will be carrying waste from the toilets at the institution to the sewage.

Mussa said that soon after the opening of the BIS, his ministry will close the Kamuzu stadium since it is not in a good condition to be used anymore.

“It could have already been closed but the ministry saw it not wise to close it without giving an alternative reliable place for sports activities in the country,” he said.
