The opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) officials who were arrested on treason charges are yet to meet the end of justice as police have extended their bail for two more months, a development that has angered them.

MCP lawmakers Jessie Kabwila and Peter Chakhwantha as well as member Ulemu Msungama were arrested in February this year and were charged with treason and sedition following a leak of a WhatsApp chat that led the police to believe that the three were planning to take over government.

Following the arrests, the police have been reported to have delayed justice for the suspects due to lack of evidence that can be presented in court.

Appearing at police headquarters in Lilongwe on Monday, as per their condition of bail, defence lawyer Gustavo Kaliwo said he is to take a legal action against the delay.

Kaliwo also expressed surprise at the delay saying that the charge of treason must be treated seriously. Police deputy spokesperson Thomex Nyaude said investigations are still underway for the case.
